Join us for a talk commemorating Franz Kafka’s death 100 years ago. Thomas Gurke will give an overview of Kafka and his literary works, his most popular book The Metamorphosis, and adaptations of it in various media. Popular culture versions include Meowmorphosis and a graphic novel Kafka that blends biographical vignettes with reworkings of Kafka’s literary pieces.

Thomas Gurke, Ph.D., is DAAD Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota and currently Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of German, Nordic, Slavic & Dutch. He has a degree in English literature and musicology and his dissertation focused on the dynamics of music and literature in the texts of James Joyce. Gurke’s publications focus on Joyce, contemporary fiction in English and German, ecology, the short story, and popular culture. He is co-editor of Words, Music, and the Popular: Global Perspectives on Intermedial Relations (Palgrave, 2021).
