Current debates on American slavery have revived the interest in Bohemian serfdom. This peculiar form of bondage existed in Bohemia from the end of the Thirty Years’ War till 1781 when it was abolished by Emperor Joseph II. The current Czech historiography tends to believe that serfdom actually did not exist and that it was only the result of Communist exaggerations. The Czech historian Ivo Cerman explains that serfdom was real and how it originated.
