From Czechs in the World to Czechs in Texas: Community History, Language, and Identity
The presenters will review the historical waves of Czech emigration around the world and focus on the language and culture in the historically Czech communities in the US, with the case in point being Texas, one of the long-lasting strongholds of Czech life in the New Word. They will share new publications and collaborative research initiatives including the fascinating 19th century inter-continental communication of two brothers and the Texas Czech Legacy Project.
About the Presenters:
Robert Dittmann is a lecturer at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, Prague. His interests include development of Czech, Czech biblical style, Czech in contact with other languages on the Czech soil and abroad.
Lida Cope is a professor of applied linguistics at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Her research focuses on the language, culture, and identity in historically Czech Moravian communities in Texas.
Eva Eckert is a professor of linguistics teaching at the Anglo-American University and Charles University in Prague. Her research focus in on sociolinguistics of languages in retreat and Texas Czech.
