Irene E. Klemetson was a daughter of two Bohemian immigrants growing up in West Central Minnesota. She was proud of her Bohemian heritage and shared it with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Klemetson died in January 2024. Czech and Slovak Cultural Center of Minnesota Board member, Jan Knudtson, is Mrs. Klemetson’s granddaughter. Ms. Knudtson has pledged $500 annually and receives a match from her employer. This allows CSCC of Minnesota to establish a new scholarship in the amount of $1,000 each academic year to support a student who chooses to study abroad in the Czech Republic of Slovak Republic.
Eligibility and Opportunities
The scholarship is open to students from Minnesota from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate academic excellence, cultural curiosity, and a commitment to international engagement. Priority may be given to applicants with a focus on Czech or Slovak studies, language acquisition, or community service related to Central Europe.
A Call to Future Ambassadors
CSCC of Minnesota hopes recipients will return not only with academic credits, but with stories, friendships, and insights that enrich their communities back home in Minnesota.
Applications for the inaugural cycle will open in February 2026 for fall semester 2026 with award announcements expected in early spring. For students eager to explore the heart of Europe, this scholarship could be the first step toward a transformative journey.
