A chance encounter on a rainy night in a youth hostel in Austria brought two people together for a conversation that has continued through the decades. During this three-month trip, a one-night stay in Salzburg, Austria, brought Karla Urbanová and me together. Another six-week bike trip in 1978 on the heels of letter writing, phone calls, and obtaining a travel visa to Czechoslovakia, a visit to Karla and her family. In 1989, the Velvet Revolution happened. It was a magical time to see the beginning of this cultural, economic, political, and social change with my friend Karla.
About the Presenter: Cynthia McArthur lives in St. Paul. Besides her trips, Cynthia started taking Český language lessons at Czech and Slovak Sokol MN many years ago. While a hard language to learn and no family connection to rely on, it continues to be a delightful learning experience along with many trips to see all the friends made along the way.
