Dr. Josef Mestenhauser

It is with great sadness we announce that the founder and a long-time leader of the Czech and Slovak Cultural Center of Minnesota (CSCC), Dr. Joe Mestenhauser, passed away on Saturday, March 14th.  Dr. Mestenhauser co-founded CSCC following the visit of the late president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, to Minnesota in 1999.  Joe was a tireless leader behind the cultural and educational activities of the center and a continuous inspiration for the Czech and Slovak communities not only in Minnesota but all over the U.S.  In addition, he held the post of Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Minnesota, Iowa, and North and South Dakota from June 1, 1999 to June 2008. We will miss him greatly, but will continue in the work he has inspired by promoting Czech and Slovak history, culture, and education in Minnesota and surrounding areas.

A beautiful statement of his life and works was recently published by the Star Tribune.
