REVOLUTIONARY CZECH BAND PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE TO ROCK THE CEDER CULTURAL CENTER |
|
(San Francisco, CA) – While other rock bands have sung about revolution, The Plastic People of the Universe have actually inspired it. Persecuted in the 1970s by the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, the Plastics were forced to build their own equipment from radio parts and play underground concerts in barns. The Plastics' undying commitment to music, however, encouraged the dissident movement that swept the communists from power in 1989. Now, all freedom loving Minnesotans will have the rare opportunity to witness "the greatest obscure rock band of all time" when the Plastic People of The Universe perform at the Ceder Cultural Center on September 10th.
While the history of The Plastics is noteworthy, the band's music is also extraordinary. Formed in 1968 when Russian tanks rolled into Prauge, the Plastics created music drawn from Frank Zappa and the Velvet Underground. The band continues to be one of the most innovative and visceral musical groups in the world. The music of the Plastic People is like nothing else; it's dark, rich composition spans musical influences from free jazz, hard rock, Slavic motifs, and '60's and '70's song-styling.
The Plastic People of the Universe's North American Fall tour coincides with the fortieth anniversary of the communist occupation of Czechoslovakia, so their show at the Ceder Cultural Center promises to be an inspirational event. We strongly encourage members of the press to feature this event for critic's choice accolades.
